Patient Manual Handling
Industry Approved Course
The Patient Manual Handling Course aims to equip learners with the necessary knowledge, skills, and attitude to safely perform patient manual handling tasks, ensuring compliance with the requirements of the HSA (Health and Safety Authority).
Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:
Identify the responsibilities of both employers and employees regarding patient manual handling
- Understand the structure and characteristics of the spinal column and its relevance to patient manual handling
- Recognize hazards associated with patient manual handling tasks
- Identify and use equipment to minimize risks related to patient manual handling
- Understand the significance of good nutrition and fitness in manual handling
- Safely perform patient manual handling tasks in accordance with established principles

Principles of safe manual handling,

Specific patient manual handling moves and techniques: Sitting up, turning, standing, walking & sitting

Dealing with a falling or fallen patient.

Use of a hoist

Use of enablers such as banana boards & turntables.
Skills demonstration will form an assessment.
Course Duration:
The course is delivered over two hours.
Course Certificate:
Successful participants will receive a Manual Handling & Patient Moving Certificate from Sheila O’Driscoll Safety Training.
